Mills College @ Northeastern - TRIO Upward Bound
Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded college preparatory program that offers assistance to low-income and first-generation college-bound students. The focus of Upward Bound is to develop skills needed for a college education. UB is dedicated to helping participating students graduate from high school with a solid foundation (i.e., completion of required coursework and a strong GPA) necessary for entering college. Upward Bound continues to support participants to ensure continued college enrollment and, ultimately, graduation.

The Mills College @ Northeastern Upward Bound program has played an integral role in the Oakland Unified School District for the last 50 years and now begins a relationship with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to continue to build and expand close relationships with eligible students and their families. Our ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills and motivation necessary for college graduation.

The Upward Bound Program Assistants provide program administrative assistance to administrative Staff for Upward Bound. This position works directly under the supervision of the Upward Bound Director and/or Office Manager. Please note that this position may require travel.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, MCUB program mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Attend the staff training, program activities, & final teacher evaluation closing session. Dates to be announced prior to hiring.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
  • Assist with recruitment of students at target schools.
  • Provide administrative assistance; including maintaining library of college information for students, filing, phone and email contact.
  • Assist with maintaining student records.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory of all office supplies and program supplies, organize storage rooms.
  • Assist with the preparation of program communication including phone calls, email correspondence (etc.), flyers, and social media content
  • Assist and attend program orientations, training, some field trips and meetings.
  • Ability to attend some weekend and evening events.
  • Maintain office space and event aesthetics, program snacks/meals & cleanliness.
  • Monitor student program spaces and support upholding program expectations.
  • Ability to pick up and drop off program snacks and/or supplies.
  • Ability to support After School Program up to 6:30 pm.
  • Create weekly Wednesday events for the After School Program.
  • Availability to lead and/or substitute teach Saturday college workshops.
  • Perform related duties as needed.


Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands: Work involves sitting for hours at the computer, which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy. Long hours during overnight travel and on-call chaperoning during trips. Work includes multiple activities and services with varying deadlines and priorities-some light t lifting to 20lbs. Driving is required.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma (Two Years Removed from High School)
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in a related field.
  • Inspirational, culturally aware with demonstrated knowledge and experience in problems facing low-income and first-generation students
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles
  • Must be able to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds


Compensation $20 an hour Up to 25 hours a week.

Dates that Program Assistant will not work

November 22nd, 2024 - December 4th, 2024

December 23rd, 2024 - January 3rd, 2025

March 28th - April 4th, 2025

Last Date of Work is May 30th
